    Pointing with the eyes or the finger occurs frequently in social interaction to indicate direction of attention and one's intentions. Research with a voluntary saccade task (where saccade direction is instructed by the colour of a fixation point) suggested that gaze cues automatically activate the oculomotor system, but non-biological cues, like arrows, do not. However, other work has failed to support the claim that gaze cues are special. In the current research we introduced biological and non-biological cues into the anti-saccade task, using a range of stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs). The anti-saccade task recruits both top ^ down and bottom^ up attentional mechanisms, as occurs in naturalistic saccadic behaviour. In experiment 1 gaze, but not arrows, facilitated saccadic reaction times (SRTs) in the opposite direction to the cues over all SOAs, whereas in experiment 2 directional word cues had no effect on saccades. In experiment 3 finger pointing cues caused reduced SRTs in the opposite direction to the cues at short SOAs. These findings suggest that biological cues automatically recruit the oculomotor system whereas non- biological cues do not. Furthermore, the anti-saccade task set appears to facilitate saccadic responses in the opposite direction to the cues

    Abstract: Emotional dysregulation facilitates emotion recognition independent of dwell time to faces

    Emotional dysregulation (ED) is the inability to understand and modulate one’s own emotional responses and has been proposed as the central feature of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Yet research suggests that people with BPD may actually be more accurate in detecting emotions in others than controls. This study examined whether ED is related to attentional biases towards facial cues of others when viewing emotional social scenarios. We predicted that participants scoring the highest for ED would be most accurate at identifying emotion. Furthermore, people who were most accurate were predicted to spend the greatest time fixating faces. We presented 5-second clips from unfamiliar soap operas which were positive, negative or neutral in emotional content, whilst eye movements were recorded. After each clip, participants (N=29) rated their emotional content on a scale from 1-7 (very negative – very positive), finally completing the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (Gratz & Roemer, 2004). As predicted, those with high ED scores were most accurate at emotion recognition. However, neither ED nor accuracy was related to time fixating faces. This suggests that ED may sensitize individuals to others’ emotions but that this may be dependent on subtle attentional biases rather than greater dwell time to faces

    Characterising developmental prosopagnosia: What can subtypes tell us?

    Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is a heterogeneous condition. Some people fail to recognise faces due to problems with face perception (apperceptive subtype), whereas others show normal perception, but poor memory for faces (associative subtype). Furthermore, some (but not all) DPs report difficulties with other cognitive tasks, such as judging emotional expressions, navigation, and within-class object recognition. This study examined whether different subtypes of DP present with different cognitive profiles. We recruited a large group of DPs (N = 36) and control participants, and examined their performance on a range of cognitive and face-processing tasks. The DP group was split into subtypes using the Cambridge Face Perception Test (Duchaine, Germine, & Nakayama, 2007). Overall, differences between subtypes were minimal: both reported similar rates of problems with navigation and within-class object discrimination; both showed smaller inversion effects for faces than controls; neither showed a composite effect for faces; and neither showed impairments when asked to discriminate facial expression, age, and gender. However, the groups diverged when discriminating changes in facial features, spacing, and contours. Overall, our results suggest that different subtypes of DP may manifest in subtle ways. We will discuss how these differences may inform future research and training programmes for DPs

    The insect pathogen Serratia marcescens Db10 uses a hybrid non-ribosomal peptide synthetase-polyketide synthase to produce the antibiotic althiomycin

    There is a continuing need to discover new bioactive natural products, such as antibiotics, in genetically-amenable micro-organisms. We observed that the enteric insect pathogen, Serratia marcescens Db10, produced a diffusible compound that inhibited the growth of Bacillis subtilis and Staphyloccocus aureus. Mapping the genetic locus required for this activity revealed a putative natural product biosynthetic gene cluster, further defined to a six-gene operon named alb1-alb6. Bioinformatic analysis of the proteins encoded by alb1-6 predicted a hybrid non-ribosomal peptide synthetase-polyketide synthase (NRPS-PKS) assembly line (Alb4/5/6), tailoring enzymes (Alb2/3) and an export/resistance protein (Alb1), and suggested that the machinery assembled althiomycin or a related molecule. Althiomycin is a ribosome-inhibiting antibiotic whose biosynthetic machinery had been elusive for decades. Chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses confirmed that wild type S. marcescens produced althiomycin and that production was eliminated on disruption of the alb gene cluster. Construction of mutants with in-frame deletions of specific alb genes demonstrated that Alb2-Alb5 were essential for althiomycin production, whereas Alb6 was required for maximal production of the antibiotic. A phosphopantetheinyl transferase enzyme required for althiomycin biosynthesis was also identified. Expression of Alb1, a predicted major facilitator superfamily efflux pump, conferred althiomycin resistance on another, sensitive, strain of S. marcescens. This is the first report of althiomycin production outside of the Myxobacteria or Streptomyces and paves the way for future exploitation of the biosynthetic machinery, since S. marcescens represents a convenient and tractable producing organism

    Polymorphisms in the circadian expressed genes PER3 and ARNTL2 are associated with diurnal preference and GNβ3 with sleep measures

    Sleep and circadian rhythms are intrinsically linked, with several sleep traits, including sleep timing and duration, influenced by both sleep homeostasis and the circadian phase. Genetic variation in several circadian genes has been associated with diurnal preference (preference in timing of sleep), although there has been limited research on whether they are associated with other sleep measurements. We investigated whether these genetic variations were associated with diurnal preference (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire) and various sleep measures, including: the global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index score; sleep duration; and sleep latency and sleep quality. We genotyped 10 polymorphisms in genes with circadian expression in participants from the G1219 sample (n = 966), a British longitudinal population sample of young adults. We conducted linear regressions using dominant, additive and recessive models of inheritance to test for associations between these polymorphisms and the sleep measures. We found a significant association between diurnal preference and a polymorphism in period homologue 3 (PER3) (P < 0.005, recessive model) and a novel nominally significant association between diurnal preference and a polymorphism in aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-like 2 (ARNTL2) (P < 0.05, additive model). We found that a polymorphism in guanine nucleotide binding protein beta 3 (GNβ3) was associated significantly with global sleep quality (P < 0.005, recessive model), and that a rare polymorphism in period homologue 2 (PER2) was associated significantly with both sleep duration and quality (P < 0.0005, recessive model). These findings suggest that genes with circadian expression may play a role in regulating both the circadian clock and sleep homeostasis, and highlight the importance of further studies aimed at dissecting the specific roles that circadian genes play in these two interrelated but unique behaviours

    Reduced Gaze Following and Attention to Heads when Viewing a "Live" Social Scene

    Social stimuli are known to both attract and direct our attention, but most research on social attention has been conducted in highly controlled laboratory settings lacking in social con- text. This study examined the role of social context on viewing behaviour of participants whilst they watched a dynamic social scene, under three different conditions. In two social groups, participants believed they were watching a live webcam of other participants. The socially-engaged group believed they would later complete a group task with the people in the video, whilst the non-engaged group believed they would not meet the people in the scene. In a third condition, participants simply free-viewed the same video with the knowl- edge that it was pre-recorded, with no suggestion of a later interaction. Results demonstrat- ed that the social context in which the stimulus was viewed significantly influenced viewing behaviour. Specifically, participants in the social conditions allocated less visual attention towards the heads of the actors in the scene and followed their gaze less than those in the free-viewing group. These findings suggest that by underestimating the impact of social context in social attention, researchers risk coming to inaccurate conclusions about how we attend to others in the real world
